What began in 1963 as a family owned company with a 24 page catalogue featuring 80 products, a team of 35 designing and manufacturing boating gear progressed rapidily through the next decade. By 1970 the product range had increased to two thousand items with 150 staff in research & development, production and sales. In 1972 Plastimo moved from a France wide operation to a global brand with the design of the first magnetic compass entirely manufactured from plastic materials. This made a compass far cheaper than the traditional brass compasses available at the time.
In 1978 Plastimo UK opened to serve the growing leisure market and Plastimo focused more on their safety and navigational equipment, pioneering liferaft technology with vacuum-packed pouch and double action firing head. This lead to Plastimo leading the industry on the development of pioneering inflatable lifejackets. The first inflatable lifejacket is officially approved in 1995, changing the game in life preservation.
Expansion continued during the early part of the new millennium with various awards of excellence topped off by Plastimos Lorient, France, factory being certified ISO 9001 for the design, manufacture and servicing of lifejackets and liferafts. Plastimo continues to provide excellent boating products to the UK market of which Sheridan Marine either stock or can source.
