Caulking cotton is a fibrous cotton material designed to be driven into seams between wooden planks to produce a watertight seal.
Caulking is a method of driving a fibrous material into seams between wooden planks to produce a watertight seal which is then covered with a layer of 'sealant' to establish the watertight seal on traditional wooded boats.
The word 'caulk' (caulking) refers to the method of closing up joints and gaps, caulking sealants, that sit on top of the caulking cotton to produce the finishing layer, are manufactured as a elastomeric material that provides a certain amount of flexibility to prevent tearing and thus water penetration.
