The trumpet top screws onto the compressed gas canister to prime the boat safety device. When the small button on the top is depressed it allows the gas to escape through the trumpet, producing a loud sound. When you stop pressing the button, the sound will stop.
Replacement air canisters are available separately so that you can reuse the trumpet part of the horn.
This fog horn is a useful safety device to have aboard in case your primary boat horn malfunctions. For River Thames usage the Boat Safety Scheme requires 'a means to make noise', this may be applicable to other waterways too so do check with your local authorities.
