WaterMota Dynamo

The WaterMota pre-crossflow petrol engine dynamo often fitted to many early Freeman Cruisers to generate electricity for charging the battery.

How does a dynamo work?

Dynamos are an early generator of sorts. Dynamos convert mechanical rotation into electrical direct current by means for rotating coils of wire and magnetic fields. The armature, a collection of rotating wire bundles, turns within the magnetic field, produced by the stator, a stationary element of the dynamo. The motion of the wire through the magnetic field causes the metal electrons to move creating an electric current in the armature.

Does my WaterMota engine have this dynamo?

Please note: Although this is the standard WaterMota dynamo for the WaterMota pre-crossflow engines it should be noted that the Vedette engine and the Ford side valve engines, normally only found on the very early 22 Mk1's, had a different model of dynamo fitted.

In the early days positive earth circuits were popular for both cars and boats. Later, negative earth became the standard. Therefore, check the polarity of your installation so that you can polarize (conditioning the dynamo for your polarity) the new dynamo during fitting.

Alternators largely replaced the dynamo over time as they are generally more efficient, more reliable and less costly. In fact, many of the Freeman Cruiser WaterMota petrol engine dynamo installations can be converted to run with the WaterMota Alternator, although some setup, additional parts and probably polarity change will likely be required.

If you have a dynamo installed it maybe easier to replace like-for-like when required as the engine will be setup for this already. In this case try to ensure that you keep the original pulley from the old dynamo to fit on to the new dynamo to keep the installation as originally fitted.
