The Sterling ProSplit Split Charger Diodes are digital alternator regulators that split alternator power between multiple battery banks for charging efficiently and safely with power back-feed prevention and gold plated terminals. These split charge diodes are suitable for alternators up to a maximum output of 90 amps.
What are battery banks?
Battery banks is a common term used to identify power sources for different applications on board. For example, it is very common to find at least two battery banks on board boats and these maybe termed as 'Engine Start' and 'Domestic' or 'Leisure' batteries.
If you have multiple batteries connected together this would still usually be defined as an individual battery bank, for example, you may have two engine star batteries joined which would equate to one battery bank, and, two domestic batteries, separately joined together, which would equate to a second battery bank on board and so on.
How does a Split Charge Diode help?
By using a split charge diode on a heat sink you can help to ensure that the alternator charges battery banks evenly preventing power back-feed, and, ensuring high currents from other battery banks do not flow up the charge lines and cause problems.
Charging multiple battery banks without a split charge diode can allow batteries to 'pull' power from each other which can lead to draining good batteries faster, or worst still, providing too much power at one time during a charge and causing too high currents in wiring, potentially causing overheating and fires.
